FBI: Hive Ransomware Group Earned $100 Million by Hacking Over 1,300 Companies

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reports that since June 2021, the Hive ransomware group has breached more than 1,300 companies and extorted approximately $100 million from victims. Even more concerning, law enforcement warns that Hive operators often deploy additional ransomware payloads from other groups within victims’ networks if the ransom is not paid.

New Security Bulletin on Hive Operations

A recent security bulletin focused on Hive’s operations was prepared by experts from the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to the FBI, Hive’s victims span a wide range of industries and critical infrastructure sectors, including government agencies, telecommunications, and IT companies. However, healthcare organizations are most frequently targeted by these hackers.

Ransomware Attacks and Malware Samples

While not all Hive ransomware attacks are listed on the ID Ransomware platform, victims have submitted over 850 malware samples to experts since the beginning of this year. Many of these samples were provided following a significant spike in ransomware activity that lasted from late March to mid-April.
