Telegram Sees Record Growth with 70 Million New Users After Social Media Outage

On October 4, 2021, Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov announced that the messaging app gained 70 million new users following widespread outages on other social media platforms.

“Yesterday, Telegram experienced a record increase in user registrations and activity. The daily growth rate of Telegram soared far above normal, and in just one day we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms,” Durov stated.

He emphasized his pride in the Telegram team’s ability to handle this unprecedented surge, saying, “I am proud that our team managed this extraordinary growth, as Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users.”

Durov also noted that users in North and South America may have experienced slower loading speeds, as millions of people from those continents rushed to join Telegram.
