Durov: Netflix and TikTok Are Killing Creativity

Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram messenger and the social network VKontakte, made strong statements in his blog about the recommendation algorithms used by social networks.

Durov lamented that most people prefer to “feed their brains not with facts” that could help change the world, but with Netflix series or TikTok videos instead.

“Unfortunately, most people prefer to feed their minds not with real facts that could allow them to change the world, but with random Netflix series or TikTok videos. On a deep level, our brain cannot distinguish fiction from reality, so the abundance of digital entertainment makes our subconscious search for solutions to non-existent problems. To be creative and productive, we must first cleanse our minds of the sticky dirt of unnecessary content that is poured into it daily by ‘recommendation algorithms.’ If we want to regain our creative freedom, we must first regain control over our own minds,” Durov wrote on his Telegram channel.

The entrepreneur also added that feeding the brain with real data allows us to solve a number of fundamental problems even in the background and to come up with unexpected solutions to various situations—for example, while sleeping.
