CitizenGrown Launches Decentralized Network of Home Growers
San Francisco-based company CitizenGrown has launched a social program that allows people to earn money by growing cannabis at home. The project officially started on October 17 in the American city of Caddo.
How Does the CitizenGrown Decentralized Platform Work?
CitizenGrown operates similarly to a blockchain network, but instead of mining cryptocurrency, its nodes grow cannabis. To participate, individuals must apply on the company’s website and receive cultivation equipment—a self-contained hydroponic growing unit. Using the node is simple: just add a specified amount of water and nutrients, then plug it in. The device operates fully automatically.
All nodes are connected to a single network via the internet. CitizenGrown’s software monitors the growth process and sends notifications when it’s time to harvest. Afterward, company staff visit the grower’s home, collect the plant, process the cannabis, and supply it to retail sellers. A portion of the profits is shared with the grower. Currently, the nodes can cultivate one of three strains: The White, Gorilla Glue, and Super Lemon Haze.
Cannabis as a Solution to Unemployment
CitizenGrown chose Caddo as the launch site for a reason. This small town in Oklahoma has a high unemployment rate. Additionally, Oklahoma residents have been affected by the war on drugs, and the company’s leadership aims to help offset the damage caused by past policies.
CitizenGrown plans to install nodes in 250 households. Local residents have enthusiastically welcomed the project and have already applied for the equipment. Experts believe that finished products will be available for sale as early as next month. Company director Reg Snodgrass explained, “The cannabis industry offers unique economic opportunities. In Caddo, we’re creating a model that can be replicated across the United States. We want to show the government and consumers how people can profit from cannabis cultivation.”
According to Snodgrass, the CitizenGrown program is an important step toward building a self-sustaining economic system for everyday people. The platform’s creators argue that the cannabis market is currently dominated by a few large companies. However, since legalization is a collective achievement, everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the industry.
