Private Company Announces Upcoming Release of Innovative Cannabinoid Detector
Israeli technology firm GemmaCert Ltd has recently announced the upcoming launch of a new, compact chemical analyzer capable of accurately determining cannabinoid concentrations in cannabis plant tissues in just a few minutes. According to company representatives, this test can be performed quickly, without the need for lengthy laboratory analysis and without causing any harm to the plants themselves.
The new device is said to be highly sensitive to cannabinoids, allowing it to detect THC concentrations as low as 0.2%. This makes the detector suitable for use in the United States, Europe, and other regions where the cultivation of industrial hemp is legal, provided that the THC content remains at or below 0.3%.
How the Analyzer Works
Company representatives explain that the device operates using infrared spectroscopy to analyze plant material. The collected data on cannabinoid concentrations is then compared to an extensive database of different plant strains, enabling the device to quickly determine the levels of psychoactive compounds in a given sample.
Regulatory Background and Industry Challenges
Despite recent reforms, industrial hemp remains strictly regulated in many countries. For example, while hemp can now be cultivated across the United States for the first time in decades, it is still technically subject to federal restrictions. If a hemp crop is found to contain more than 0.3% THC, growers can face fines for illegal cultivation of psychoactive cannabis, along with confiscation and destruction of their crops.
Currently, the technology for detecting and analyzing cannabinoid concentrations in plant tissues is underdeveloped. Most inspections rely on traditional laboratory tests, which are time-consuming, or on electronic detectors that often lack the sensitivity needed to accurately measure THC levels. This has led to numerous false confiscations and legal disputes in the U.S. and other countries where industrial hemp is legal.
Advantages of the New Device
According to the manufacturer, the main advantages of the new analyzer are its affordability, compact size, accuracy, and ease of use. These features will allow farmers themselves to monitor THC levels in their crops, reducing the risk of regulatory issues.
“Our new analyzer simplifies the complicated process of testing THC concentrations in plants to just the push of a button and a couple of minutes of waiting. This will put an end to false plant seizures and other difficulties currently associated with such inspections,” said GemmaCert CEO Guy Setton.
“At this point, we hope that the primary market for our new product will be farmers themselves, rather than law enforcement agencies,” Mr. Setton added. “Such an effective analyzer will also be useful in other areas of the cannabis market, including quality control at warehouses and retail stores.”
Despite the product’s strong promotion, the company has not yet announced an exact release date or detailed marketing plans outside of Israel and the United States, where several interested customers have already emerged.
